As an instructional coach in literacy development, I often find myself reflecting on my own journey through the world of reading. Growing up in the Whole Language era, I was immersed in an educational philosophy that emphasized the holistic nature of reading, focusing on meaning-making and context rather than explicit instruction in phonics. While this approach had its merits, my personal experience has shown me the transformative power of embracing the science of reading.
Whole Language was deeply ingrained in my early education. I remember engaging in activities that prioritized comprehension over decoding, and while I enjoyed reading, I struggled with spelling and phonics rules. Like many others, I believed that exposure to rich literature and immersion in language would naturally lead to proficient reading skills.
